The 3-day workshop on Scaling-up Leadership of Female Survivors for Effective Gender-Based
Violence (GBV) Response and Access to Justice in Oshodi-Isolo Local Government Area, Lagos was held
from July 25th to 27th, 2023. The workshop aimed to empower and support female survivors of GBV
in Oshodi-Isolo LGA, addressing the multi-faceted challenges faced by survivors and creating an
environment where they can access justice, receive support, and lead efforts to combat gender-based
violence in their communities.
This intervention which was funded by the African Women Development Fund, focused on strengthening leadership capacity of vulnerable females. persons to report and document sexual and gender-based violence under existing laws as well as to advocate for increased access to justice for those under threat of/or experiencing s gender-based violence in the two LGAs. The intervention worked on three barriers namely (a) Lack of political will by the government to ensure that the voices of marginalized females. Persons in Nigeria are heard and their unique justice related needs are addressed effectively within the formal justice institutions, (b) widespread misunderstanding of sexual orientation and social stigma against vulnerable females. Persons as a result of some harmful cultural and religious beliefs and (c) insufficient verifiable data on the experiences of vulnerable females. Persons in Nigeria as it relates to access to justice. This project is ongoing and when completed will impact 2500 beneficiaries, provide justice related services 60 survivors and engage 40 high level justice service sectors leaders including the police in access to justice work.
